Note that this standard has been updated and you will need to meet the requirements set out in AS/NZS 4968.1:2023 Heavy road vehicles.

You may be required to comply with this standard if you operate a long distance interstate road transport business, and you intend to use a prime mover or semi-trailer.

Fifth wheel assemblies must be mounted on prime movers and semi-trailers according to the requirements of this standard.

This Standard sets out the attachment design forces for fifth wheel assembly and equations to determine the required D-value of components for various combinations. This standard applies to fifth wheel assemblies used with 50 mm, 75 mm and 90 mm kingpins, and associated equipment for articulated vehicle combination, used in heavy road vehicles, B-doubles and road trains, in normal use on both sealed and unsealed roads.
