Onshore Petroleum Special Prospecting Authority (PSPA) - New South Wales

Service summary

You will require this authority if you intend to carry out works on, or to remove samples from, land for the purpose of testing the quality and quantity of petroleum and the potential to recover petroleum from the land. Please be aware that there is currently a freeze on assessing new applications for this licence. No new applications will be considered until the Strategic Release Framework is in place.

This approval gives you the exclusive right to conduct one of the following activities on specified NSW land:

  • speculative geological, geophysical or geochemical surveys
  • scientific investigations.

Please be aware that you may be granted a low-impact prospecting title if the Agency determines that your activities are unlikely to impact upon the land.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this authority you must provide:

  • the application fee and form
  • a map or plan, drawn in accordance with the regulations, on which there is explanation of the boundaries of the area to which the title is intended to apply
  • a proposed work program complying with the regulations and indicating the nature and extent of operations to be carried on under the authority of the title
  • evidence of your financial standing
  • evidence of your technical qualifications and technical advisers.

A term not exceeding 12 months, as decided by the Agency.
