This licence is required for all dealings in motor vehicles including new and secondhand vehicles inclusive of:
- All terrain vehicles (ATV's) and quad bikes;
- Motorised scooters;
- Any vehicle over 200 watts (excluding Segways)
It is issued on an indefinite basis, subject to traders submitting an annual return, inclusive of financial information.
This licence is not required for the sale of plant and equipment eg cranes, hoists, conveyors, excavators, road graders, commercial vehicles exceeding five tonnes in mass and vehicles primarily designed for the carriage of stock.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
Application may be made by either an individual or body corporate. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient material and financial resources to carry out the activity of a Motor Vehicle Dealer and are required to submit a business plan with their application and they must advertise their intention to apply for a Motor Vehicle Dealers Licence in a Northern Territory Regional Newspaper [see guide to advertising]. Applicants for Motor Vehicle Dealers Licences require a Manager to be appointed to oversee the daily operations of the dealership [see fact sheet on Commissioners approval of Manager].
