Pilot/Escort Vehicle Driver Accreditation - Queensland

Service summary

A Pilot Vehicle Driver accreditation is required to operate a pilot vehicle to warn other road users of the presence of an oversize vehicle/combination.

An Escort Vehicle Driver accreditation is required to operate a pilot or escort vehicle to warn other road users of the presence of an oversize vehicle/combination and perform limited traffic control.

The following will be required:

  • complete the Pilot/Escort Vehicle Driver Accreditation application form (F4483)
  • hold an open (Australian or New Zealand) driver licence or have previously held an open (Australian or New Zealand) driver licence and currently hold a probationary or restricted driver licence for a car
  • complete the relevant training course / assessment / expertise requirements
  • pay the appropriate fee.

You can obtain this accreditation by completing the appropriate application for the level you are applying for and submitting it, with the relevant documents, to the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR). For information on your nearest TMR Customer Service Centre, please phone the call centre or visit the department's website.

Accredited Pilot Vehicle Driver:

Driver Licence Requirement

  • hold an open (Australian or New Zealand) driver licence or have previously held an open (Australian or New Zealand) driver licence and currently hold a probationary or restricted driver licence for a car.

Documents Required:

  • standard evidence of identity (EOI) - (Queensland driver licence current or expired by less than 2 years, or 3 evidence of identity documents - 1 category A document, 1 category B document and 1 document from either category with the applicant's signature)
  • hold an open (Australian and New Zealand) driver licence or have previously held an open (Australian or New Zealand) driver licence and currently hold a probationary or restricted driver licence for a car
  • Pilot/Escort Vehicle Driver Accreditation Application (F4483)
  • evidence of equivalent qualification (please refer to competency requirements).

Accredited Escort Vehicle Driver

Competency Requirements:

Applicant must hold a Pilot Vehicle Driver Accreditation prior to applying for an Escort Vehicle Driver Accreditation. The applicant must provide/undertake the following:

  • hold a Statement of Attainment - Level 2 Escort Vehicle Driver. To obtain a Statement of Attainment, you must provide evidence to an RTO approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads of having completed a minimum of 12 trips (as detailed in a record movement book) as a pilot vehicle driver.

Your criminal and traffic history will be checked.
