Authority to Use, Carry or Possess a Crossbow - Tasmania

Service summary

You will require this authorisation if you intend to use, carry or possess a crossbow. You will need to apply to the Commissioner of Police, who may issue a permit if it is deemed that you have a legitimate reason for using, carrying or possessing a crossbow. Legitimate reasons include:

  • the sale of firearms
  • conducting research
  • hunting vermin
  • professional sporting club membership
  • as part of a collection
  • another purpose the Commissioner considers appropriate.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this authorisation, you must:

  • be 18 years or older and be considered a fit and proper person to use, carry or have possession of a crossbow
  • disclose the type of crossbow
  • describe the reason for possessing, owning, selling, or using a crossbow
  • be able to demonstrate secure and safe storage when weapon is not in use
  • provide any other information the Commissioner considers appropriate
  • pay the applicable fees.
