Registration as a Teacher - Tasmania

Description

You will need to be registered as a teacher to teach in a school, college or at TasTAFE. There are two main registration types:

  • Teacher registration - you must have an approved teaching qualification, consisting of a minimum of four years of tertiary / higher education.
  • Specialist Vocational Educational and Training Registration - you must have a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment or its equivalent, plus Certificate III level industry qualifications.

To be eligible for registration, you must:

  • be of good character and fit to teach
  • have the relevant qualifications
  • be registered to work with vulnerable people
  • be able to communicate at a professional level in the English language.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will need to meet the renewal requirements for educational practice and participation in professional development.

Duration

A cycle of registration is usually granted for five years. At the end of the five year cycle you will undertake a formal renewal process. Provisionally registered teachers apply to the board for a new cycle of registration.
