Code for Managing Asbestos in Workplaces - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this code if you manage or control a workplace where there is a risk that employees will be exposed to asbestos. Examples include:

  • workplaces where asbestos is fixed or installed in a building, structure, ship or equipment
  • demolition works on a building, structure, ship or plant where asbestos is fixed or installed
  • workplaces where activities involving asbestos-containing material (ACM) are carried out.

This code does not apply to asbestos removal.

The code sets out practical ways that you can identify asbestos in your workplace and implement safety procedures to reduce risk to the health of your employees, and meet your occupational health and safety obligations.

This code of practice is a Compliance Code. Compliance Codes are made to provide practical guidance to persons who have occupational health and safety duties or obligations.

Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. Failure to comply with a Compliance Code does not give rise to civil or criminal liability. However, meeting the requirements of a compliance code means that you have fulfilled your occupational health and safety duties and obligations in relation to the matters covered by the compliance code.

Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required by your business.
