Firearm Licence - Victoria

Service summary

You will require this licence if you intend to possess a firearm. There are a number of licence categories. The category of licence you will require varies according to the type of firearm and how you intend to use it.

  • Long arms: Category A, B, C, D, and E.
  • Handguns: General Category, Provisional and Category E.

Category A and B licences are for:

  • sport or target shooting
  • hunting
  • primary production
  • to work in the security or prison industry
  • to be a firearms safety instructor
  • for other official or commercial purposes permitted by the regulations.

Category C licences are for:

  • clay target shooting
  • clay target shooting possession on behalf of a junior licence holder
  • primary production
  • professional hunting
  • other uses approved by the agency.

Category D licences are held for professional hunting.

General Category and Category E licences are for:

  • target shooting
  • working in the security or prison industry
  • firearms safety instructors
  • other uses approved by the agency.
