Approval of Pool Betting Schemes - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will need this approval if you intend to operate, advertise or distribute entry forms for a pool betting competition.

A pool betting competition involves a group of people contributing a fixed amount of money for the purpose of gambling on an event, usually sport related. The winners of the bet each receive an even share of the total amount that has been contributed to the pool. These types of pools are commonly conducted in the workplace for big sporting events and are also known as either:

  • sports lotteries
  • office sweeps
  • office pools.

The conduct of more than one pool betting competition is known as a pool betting scheme.

If you intend to expand a scheme that already exists in another state, you may need to form an agreement with your state and the ACT for the purpose of calculating whether a levy must be paid.
