You may be required to comply with this code if you conduct a business with people working for you. This Code of Practice provides practical guidance for persons conducting a business or undertaking on how to comply with the duty to provide adequate first aid facilities in the workplace. It includes information on first aid kits, procedures, facilities and training for first aiders.
This Code applies to all types of work and all workplaces including workplaces that are outdoors, mobile or remote. If you intend to conduct a business or undertaking you must ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that workers and other persons are not exposed to health and safety risks. First aid requirements will vary from one workplace to the next, depending on the nature of the work, the type of hazards, the workplace size and location, as well as the number of people at the workplace. These factors must be taken into account when deciding what first aid arrangements need to be provided. The Code provides information on using a risk management approach to tailor first aid that suits the circumstances of your workplace, while also providing guidance on the number of first aid kits, their contents and the number of trainer first aiders that are appropriate for some types of workplaces.
This Code places specific obligations on a person conducting a business or undertaking in relation to first aid, including a requirement to:
- provide first aid equipment and ensure each worker at the workplace has access to the equipment
- ensure access to facilities for the administration of first aid
- ensure than an adequate number of workers are trained to administer first aid at the workplace or that workers have access to an adequate number of other people who have been trained to administer first aid
For the purpose of compliance with this code, you must consult with your employees, contractors, on-hire workers, volunteers and any other people who are working for you in regards to first aid.
