Jockey and Rider Licence (Thoroughbred Racing) - Australian Capital Territory


You will require this licence if you intend to ride a thoroughbred horse in a race in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). There are three variations of licence available:

  • Jockey: ride horses in races.
  • Apprentice jockey: learn to become a jockey with a licensed trainer.
  • Approved rider: ride horses in races at a registered picnic meeting (amateur races).

If you hold a licence to ride issued by an interstate or overseas racing authority you may be permitted to ride in the ACT subject to conditions.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for a licence you must:

  • Hold the appropriate qualifications in accordance with the Rules;
  • Not be a licensed trainer;
  • Not be licensed as a bookmaker or bookmakers clerk;
  • Hold current public liability insurance;
  • Provide any other relevant information;
  • Submit the application form and
  • Pay the required fees.
