You will need this certificate if you intend to practise law in the Australian Capital Territory. Legal practice means being paid to do any work in connection with the administration of the law, including preparing deeds, instruments or contracts relating to legal proceedings of any kind.
The type of certificate you need to apply for will depend on the type of legal practice you intend to undertake. There are two types of practising certificate:
- unrestricted (e.g. sole practitioners, principals in firms, directors of an incorporated legal practices)
- restricted (e.g. employees of an incorporated legal practices).
