National Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos [NOHSC:2002(2005)] - Australian Capital Territory

You will be required to comply with this code if you are an asbestos removalist involved in asbestos removal in Australian workplaces. The code covers minimum standards and requirements for the safe removal of asbestos-containing materials (ACM) from all workplaces.

Appendix A of the code lists the materials that have historically contained asbestos in Australia, it outlines past evidence on when ACM should and should not have been removed. The decision to remove ACM should be made on the basis of a risk assessment. The code provides guidance on when the removal of ACM is required or recommended.

It should be noted that there is an inconsistency clause listed in the Act where regulations that are in conflict with approved codes are to be complied with. Any requirement of this code that is in conflict with what a regulation states may be disregarded, and the regulation complied with.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance that may be required.
