Trader Licence (Pawnbroker) - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will need this category of Trader Licence if you intend to act as a pawnbroker. Pawnbrokers are involved in the:

  • advance of money on the security of goods pledged by the customer
  • offer goods for resale.

You may apply for this licence if you are:

  • an individual
  • a partnership
  • a corporation
  • an association under the Association Incorporation Act 1991.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • not have committed an offence against the Act or a corresponding law of another State or Territory
  • not have committed an offence involving fraud or dishonesty
  • not have been refused a licence, or had a licence cancelled or revoked under this Act or a corresponding law of another State or Territory
  • pay all the relevant application fees.

If you hold a licence in another State or Territory and intend to conduct work in the Australian Capital Territory your licensing status may be recognised under the mutual recognition system.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

To comply with this licence you must maintain a register detailing:

  • an accurate description of pawned articles
  • the amount lent
  • the rate of interest (weekly or monthly)
  • the date the article was pawned
  • the address given by the person.
