Preparation of Safety Data Sheets for Hazardous Chemicals Code of Practice - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will need to comply with this code if you need to prepare Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) during the course of your work. A MSDS must be prepared if your work involves the use of, manufacture or exposure to dangerous or hazardous substances. Compliance with this code will ensure the MSDS is prepared in accordance with the recommended formats in Australia. This code of practice applies to:

  • materials classified as hazardous substances and / or dangerous goods
  • materials which may give rise to health, safety or environmental effects when used in the workplace.

Suppliers must produce MSDS for all hazardous substances and / or dangerous goods. An MSDS provides employers, self-employed persons, employees and other health and safety representatives with the necessary information to safely manage the risk from hazardous or dangerous substance exposure. It describes the chemical and physical properties of a material and provides advice on safe handling and use of the material. The term Safety Data Sheet (SDS) is also commonly used overseas.
