Race Bookmaking Licence - Australian Capital Territory


You will require this licence if you intend to operate as a race bookmaker. Race bookmakers take bets of money on race events on behalf of the general public. Races include thoroughbred and harness races.

This licence does not include conducting a totalisator, you will require a separate licence if you intend to include this in your operations.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • have your finger and palm prints taken by a police officer at a police station prior to submitting your application
  • submit an application
  • provide a copy of your driver's licence, passport and full birth certificate
  • provide a security guarantee
  • pay the application fee
  • submit, with your application, an authorisation to allow a police officer to make enquiries and make a report to the commission about your character and criminal record.

A race bookmaking licence is issued for a maximum period of 3 years.


Licences are renewable on 30 June of the expiring year.

Application process


You will need to submit with your application copies of your driver's licence and passports held, a copy of your full birth certificate and a copy of the race bookmaker's security guarantee.
