Accreditation of a Power Station for Creation of RECs - Australian Government

You will require this accreditation if you are the owner / entity of a accredited power station intending to invest in, or generate renewable energy and intend to create Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).

Upon accreditation, power stations are eligible to create RECs through an internet based registry system, known as the REC-registry.

Once the RECs are created and registered, through a validation and audit process, the RECs can be traded independently of the physical electricity to third parties and provide a second revenue stream for eligible power stations.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Service type

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To become an accredited renewable energy power station, the power station must:

  • use one or more of the eligible renewable energy sources to generate electricity
  • have obtained, and comply with the provisions of, all relevant environmental and other approvals for the operation of a power station
  • be able to measure the amount of electricity being generated
  • supply the generated electricity to directly meet demand for electrical energy.

The accreditation process has two parts. Firstly the entity / owner of the power station is registered. Secondly, the power station has to be registered. Thus, before applying for accreditation of a power station, the power station's owner will first need to become a registered person. To be eligible, you must be a fit and proper person.

If an initial application for registration is approved, the applicant will be allocated a unique registration number and will then be able to apply for the accreditation of multiple power stations.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.
