Accredited Pathology Laboratories - Australian Government


You will need this accreditation if you intend to operate a laboratory which provides pathology services. This licence is for the premises only and is required if you intend to claim Medicare benefits.

Laboratory categories include general, medical and specialised laboratories:

  • a general category laboratory operates under the supervision of a pathologist or senior scientist
  • a medical laboratory operates under a medical practitioner
  • a specialised laboratory operates under the supervision of a person with special qualifications or skills.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for accreditation you must:

  • have National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accreditation
  • be a current approved pathology authority
  • submit an approval of premises as an accredited pathology laboratory form with the advisory report from NATA.
