Air Transport Pilot Licence - Australian Government

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to fly an aircraft as pilot in command or co-pilot and conduct both private and commercial operations. This licence covers flights that:

  • require two or more flight crew
  • will engage in regular public cargo or passenger transport operations.

You may receive a licence for either of the following aircraft types:

  • Aeroplane (A)
  • Helicopter (H).

You may receive a class rating for the following class of aircraft:

  • Single-engine aircraft
  • Multi-engine aircraft
  • Single-engine helicopter.

You are only allowed to operate the type and class of aircraft that is listed on your licence. You receive class and type ratings according to the competency based training units that you have undertaken at approved flight training organisations or under the authority of an Air Operator Certificate.

Please be aware that there are comprehensive design endorsements, operational ratings, operational endorsements and flight activity endorsements which must be listed on your licence before you can undertake certain activities. Please note that there are requirements related to carrying sufficient fuel and monitoring amounts of fuel during flights.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be at least 21 years of age
  • hold either a commercial pilot licence or multi-crew pilot licence with the same aircraft category rating
  • complete the relevant flight training at an approved flight training organisation
  • pass the air transport pilot licence theory exam for the category of aircraft you intend to operate
  • have completed 1500 hours experience for the aeroplane category or 1000 hours for the helicopter category
  • complete an approved course of multi-crew cooperation training
  • pass an air transport pilot licence flight test.
