Application to Import Firearms or Firearms-Related Articles - Australian Government

Description

You will need this permission if you intend to import certain kinds of firearms or related items into Australia.

Firearm-related articles include:

  • accessories
  • parts
  • magazines
  • ammunition
  • components of ammunition
  • imitation firearms.

Articles can only be imported if they are listed in Part 2 of Schedule 6 of the Regulations. They must be imported according to the requirements for that item.

There are 3 requirements for importation:

  • import tests
  • serial numbers
  • safety testing.

Before you submit an application, you should contact your state or territory firearms registry. They will ensure that you:

  • understand local requirements
  • are licensed or authorised to possess the article for your intended use and provide a Permit to acquire (PTA), if required. 

A PTA is a statement by the relevant firearms registry that when your firearm is imported, you will be authorised to possess that article for its intended purpose.
