Approval of a Collection Centre - Australian Government

Description

You will require this approval to operate a centre from which pathology specimens are collected. Approval of a collection centre will allow you to claim Medicare benefits for pathology services you provide.

Pathology services must be conducted by an approved pathologist in an approved pathology laboratory for the services to be eligible for a Medicare rebate. This approval is for the collection premises only and must be used in conjunction with an Approved Pathology Authority and may be part of a larger facility.

You will need to apply for approval for each collection centre location.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval you must:

  • be a current Approved Pathology Authority (APA)
  • own or be in agreement to use the correct category of Laboratory for the services you will provide (Specialised or General)
  • staff the centre with people employed or engaged by an APA
  • meet the Guidelines for Approved Pathology Collection Centres
  • provide supporting documents showing the APA connection to the premises used by the Approved Collection Centre.

Duration

New Approved Collection Centre approvals are granted for a 24 month period. For Approved Collection Centres renewing or subject to merger or acquisition, approved applications are granted for a 6 month period.
