Approval of Borrowing Institutions - Australian Government

Description

You will be required to apply for this approval if you provide public exhibits of art and cultural objects and intend to borrow a cultural object for exhibition to the public at your institution. This approval covers all objects that are of interest for the following reasons:

  • archaeological
  • artistic
  • ethnological
  • historical
  • literary
  • scientific
  • technological reasons.

This approval is required for any institution that borrows cultural objects for public exhibition, such as museums and art galleries. An approved institution will automatically be protected for imported objects for up to 2 years from the date they are imported into Australia.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to receive approval you must:

  • collect and publicly exhibit objects that are of archaeological, artistic, ethnological, historical, literary, scientific or technological interest
  • be established by a law of the Commonwealth, state or territory or be prescribed by the Regulation
  • show expertise in the management of collections of art and cultural objects
  • have clear procedures for the identification of the provenance of objects collected and exhibited
  • have clear procedures for negotiating temporary loan arrangements
  • show that the lender has the legal authority to lend the object
  • show that valid export licences or permits have been received for the object in its country of origin
  • submit a detailed application.
