Description

You will require this approval if you intend to import a new or second-hand road vehicle into Australia.

There are several types of approval available depending on the type of vehicle being imported (such as car, trailer, mining equipment) and its intended use (racing, exhibition, vehicle evaluation, rallying). Approval is required for both the importation of the vehicle and the supply of the vehicle within the Australian Market.

Eligibility requirements

Permission to import a vehicle must be obtained prior to the vehicle being imported. The vehicle must comply with national standards and have identification plates. Some exemptions exist.

For example, approval can be obtained to import non-standard road vehicles or vehicles without identification plates if the vehicle was manufactured before 1 January 1989.

Applicants should also consult with the Agency regarding applicable tariffs and quarantine provisions, or State or Territory registering authorities for registration requirements.
