Approved Pathology Authority - Australian Government


You will require this approval if you are the owner of a pathology laboratory and intend to claim Medicare benefits.

For a pathologists' services to be eligible for a Medicare rebate they must be conducted by an approved pathologist in an approved pathology laboratory. Additionally, the owner of the pathology laboratory must be an approved pathology authority.

An approved pathology authority has effective control of the:

  • laboratory premises
  • use of equipment in the laboratory
  • employment of staff in the laboratory.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To become an approved pathology authority you are required to submit an application and an undertaking which states you will comply with all relevant requirements. Each undertaking is accepted for one year. You must make lodgement of a further application and undertaking before the expiry of the previous undertaking to avoid any gap in eligibility for payment of Medicare benefits.
