Description

You will require this approval if you are the owner of a pathology laboratory and intend to claim Medicare benefits.

For a pathologists' services to be eligible for a Medicare rebate they must be conducted by an approved pathologist in an approved pathology laboratory. Additionally, the owner of the pathology laboratory must be an approved pathology authority.

An approved pathology authority has effective control of the:

  • laboratory premises
  • use of equipment in the laboratory
  • employment of staff in the laboratory.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for approval you must:

  • own a pathology laboratory that intends to claim Medicare benefits
  • be a fit and proper person
  • provide your approved pathology authority name, registered address and address for correspondence
  • provide your authorised representative name and contact details
  • provide your proprietor's ACN, ABN, registered trading name, date trading name expires and whether the proprietor is an individual, partnership, company or a government agency or public body
  • provide details of your company or partnership if applicable
  • provide principal officer details.
