Australian General Shipping Register - Australian Government

Description

You will require this registration if you operate a vessel that is 24 metres or more in tonnage length and its purpose is to earn income by way of cargo, passengers or other services.

Please note that:

  • all vessels undertaking overseas voyages must be registered
  • provisional registration is also available 
  • if your ship is a commercial vessel over 24 metres in tonnage length then you must fly the Australian Red Ensign
  • other registered ships may fly either the Australian National Flag or the Red Ensign.

Ships less than 24 metres in tonnage length, Government ships, fishing vessels and pleasure craft do not need to be registered. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to receive this registration you must:

  • submit an application providing information about the ship, boat or vessel you are registering
  • provide a declaration of ownership and nationality
  • provide notice of appointment of a registered agent of the ship
  • provide identification documentation for the ship, boat or vessel that is either from the last place of registration or the manufacturer (builder's certificate).
