Note that this standard has been updated and you will need to meet the requirements set out in AS 4484:2016 Gas Cylinders for Industrial, Scientific, Medical and Refrigerant use - Labelling and Colour Coding.

You may be required to comply with this standard if you intend to apply for a refrigerant air-conditioning (RAC) industry permit. A RAC industry permit means any of the following:

  • refrigerant handling licence
  • refrigerant trading authorisation
  • RAC equipment manufacturing authorisation
  • halon special permit
  • restricted refrigerant trading authorisation.

To be eligible for a permit you must demonstrate your knowledge of any standard relevant to work to be carried out under your permit. You must carry out any work under a permit in accordance with the relevant standard. This standard specifies the requirements for labelling and colour coding to identify the contents of compressed gas cylinders for industrial, scientific, medical and refrigerant gases. Colour coding includes special identification for educator tubes to indicate liquid withdrawal.
