Compass Adjuster's Licence - Australian Government


You will require this licence if you intend to become a qualified compass adjuster. Compass adjustment is to align the vessel to the earth's magnetic field, pointing to magnetic north.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • have successfully completed an AMSA approved course in the adjustment of compasses
  • provide copies of at least 12 deviation cards of ships whose compasses you assisted in the adjustment of
  • provide testimonials of the responsible adjusters in relation to your satisfactory assistance.

You must also provide a certified copy of your Certificate of Competency. Overseas compass adjuster licences may be recognised under certain circumstances.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

It is an ongoing requirement that you comply with the relevant standards:

  • Magnetic Compasses Carriage and Performance Standards
  • Performance Standards for Gyro-compasses.


Licence remains in force until revoked.
