You must apply for permission from the Australian government if you intend to export goods that have been classified as restricted goods to a country outside of Australia. The approval or permit required is determined by the type of goods being exported and must be issued by the appropriate authority or agency.
If you intend to export something out of Australia that falls under any of the following categories, you should review the Agency website for clarification on how to receive permission to export:
- biological agents
- endangered animal and plant species, cetaceans (whales, dolphins and porpoises), cat and dog fur
- credit cards
- cultural and heritage goods
- firearms, parts, accessories, ammunition, defence and strategic goods
- diamonds - Kimberley Process
- hazardous waste
- human blood and tissue
- security sensitive ammonium nitrate (SSAN) and ozone depleting substances / synthetic greenhouse gases
- pornography and other objectionable material
- asbestos, certain chemical compounds, prescription medicines, drugs and precursor substances
- nuclear material, radioactive sources and radioactive waste
- toothfish
- wine and brandy.
Please note that not all types of each category of goods mentioned in the above list require a permission to export. However, it is recommended that you consult the Agency prior to exporting any of these types of goods, as they will inform you if you require permission.
