Extra Service Status of Residential Care Facilities - Australian Government

You may need this status if you operate a residential aged care facility and intend to offer your patients a significantly higher than usual standard of:

  • accommodation
  • food
  • services.

This status allows you to charge your residents higher fees. However, it lowers the amount of subsidy you will receive from the Commonwealth. You may apply for this status for all, or part, of your aged care facility.

Service type

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this status you must satisfy the Agency that:

  • the standard of aged care being provided is significantly higher than the average standard in residential care services that do not have extra service status
  • granting the extra service status would not unreasonably reduce access to residential care by people living in the State, Territory or region concerned
  • you have a history of good conduct and compliance with its responsibilities and obligations arising from the receipt of any payments from the Agency.
