Legal deposit is a law that ensures that material published in Australia is preserved for current and future generations. It requires publishers to deposit publications with the National Library of Australia and the state or territory library where the publisher is based.

Legal deposit applies to Australian print and electronic publications, including:

  • graphic novels, comic books, zines
  • maps, sheet music
  • websites
  • newspapers, magazines, journals, newsletters
  • standalone or annual reports
  • government publications.
