Licence to Operate a Licensed Post Office (LPO) - Australian Government


You will require this licence if you intend to operate as a Licensed Post Office (LPO) and provide postal products and services such as selling stamps, postpacks and money orders. LPO services can be provided as a standalone activity or as part of a broader business that sells other non-postal products or services.

Other licensing options may be available, such as Community Postal Agents and Franchised Post Offices.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to operate a Licensed Post Office you may be required to provide:

  • Details of the legal entity you plan to list on the LPO agreement;
  • A resume outlining your employment history for the past 7 years;
  • Details of your cash flow projections for the business;
  • A site-specific business plan including goals for the business;
  • A minimum of 2 business / professional referees and 1 financial referee;
  • Personal assets and liabilities statement; and
  • Details of your proposed financing arrangements for purchasing the business.

You will also be required to discuss your experience, skills, strengths and weaknesses with regard to all facets of running the business. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.
