Master Fisherman's Licence: Torres Strait - Australian Government

Description

You will require this licence if you conduct commercial fishing in the Torres Strait protected zone. The Protected Zone is the sea area between mainland New Guinea and Australia.

Marine species covered by this permit include:

  • Tropical Rock Lobster
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Pearl Shell
  • Prawn
  • Sea Cucumbers
  • Trochus
  • Crab
  • Fin Fish
  • all sub species.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

Traditional inhabitants that hold a Traditional Inhabitant Fishing Boat Licence do not require this licence unless they are first time applicants. If you are a first time applicant, you must supply a traditional inhabitant identification form with the Master Fisherman's licence.

Eligibility requirements

Non-traditional inhabitants who intend to obtain a new Torres Strait master fisherman's licence require a nomination from the owner of the fishing operation.

Transfer

Master fisherman licences are not transferable. The number of non-traditional inhabitants that can be nominated to hold master fisherman licences is different for each operation.
