Description

You will require this Medicare provider number if you intend to operate as a health professional under a Medicare provider scheme.

You will be able to receive a provider number or a provider / registration number if you work in one of the following health professions:

  • general or medical practitioner
  • nurse practitioner
  • midwife
  • dentist
  • optometrist
  • orthoptist
  • Aboriginal health worker
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health practitioner
  • audiologist
  • chiropractor
  • diabetes educator
  • dietician
  • exercise physiologist
  • mental health nurse
  • occupational therapist
  • osteopath
  • physiotherapist
  • podiatrist
  • psychologist
  • social worker
  • speech pathologist.

A medical practitioner or allied health professional must have a provider number for every location from which they deliver services.

To be eligible to apply for a Medicare Provider Number, you must be a registered health professional.

There are restrictions on accessing Medicare benefits for medical practitioners who:

  • are overseas trained
  • are former overseas medical students
  • did not complete their medical training by 1 January 1997
  • were not Australian citizens or permanent residents on 1 January 1997.
