Offshore Minerals Exploration Licence - Australian Government

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to explore and recover minerals found within the coastal waters of Australia.

This licence gives the holder exclusive rights to undertake exploration and apply for further approvals to undertake exploration related activities. Offshore areas of up to a maximum of 500 blocks are open to application, providing they are not closed to mineral activity.

A mineral:

  • is defined as a naturally occurring substance or a naturally occurring mixture of substances
  • may be in the form of sand, gravel, clay, limestone, rock, evaporates, shale, oil-shale and coal.

Note, minerals do not include oil and gas.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must provide:

  • details of the proposed work program
  • a technical assessment of the mineral potential of the area
  • evidence of technical and financial capacity
  • a map of the application area.

The block you are applying for must:

  • be vacant, and not excluded
  • form a discrete area, not more than 500 blocks.

Duration

Valid initially for four years. May be renewed up to three times for a duration of two years each.
