Public Weighbridge Licence - Australian Government

You will require this licence if you intend to operate a public weighbridge in Australia.

A weighbridge is a measuring instrument that is of a capacity of 3 tonnes or more and has a platform by the use of which the measuring instrument is capable of determining the mass of a vehicle or livestock.

You must also comply with further requirements if you intend to operate a public weighbridge or use one for trade which include:

  • locating the weighbridge so a vehicle may enter it without the aid of a turning platform
  • protecting the indicating device from the elements by an office or other similar means
  • ensuring water, mud or debris is unable to accumulate under the platform or in the pit
  • allowing the operator to view the entire platform and measurement result without moving from their standard operating position
  • providing a surface of concrete, or other approved material, for the approach to the weighbridge
  • only operating a weighbridge constructed of concrete, steel or other approved material.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Eligibility requirements

A licence may be granted to individuals, partnerships and companies who are able to satisfy the legal requirements for a public weighbridge licensee.

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a fit and proper person
  • undergo a criminal history check and submit a National Criminal History Report
  • provide details of all employees that will be operating the weighbridge
  • have the weighbridge inspected to ensure that it is suitable for use as a public weighbridge
  • pay any required fees.

Under the new national legislation there are provisions available for licensees to contract the day to day operations of a public weighbridge to another person. That contracted person must meet all the legislative requirements and conditions as if they were eligible for a licence themselves.

If you intend to perform end-and-end weighings on weighbridges you will need to meet certain strict conditions and accuracy requirements.

Please consult the Contact Officer for more information regarding eligibility requirements.

Licences will be renewed over one, two or three years.
