You will be required to register models of greenhouse and energy minimum standards (GEMS) products if you intend to import, manufacture or supply a GEMS product. A product covered by a GEMS determination can only be supplied or offered for supply, or used for a commercial purpose, if the model of the product is registered. More than one registration for the same product model is not allowed in Australia.
GEMS determinations cover different product classes, such as air conditioners, televisions and heaters. They specify requirements for energy consumption, greenhouse gas production, labelling and some other matters, including the environment and human health. Exemptions from complying with one or more requirements of a GEMS determination can also be granted.
