Registration as a Tax Agent - Australian Government

Description

You will require this registration if you intend to provide tax agent services for a fee or reward.

Tax agent services include:

  • working out or advising about liabilities, obligations or entitlements of entities under a taxation law
  • representing entities in their dealings with the Commissioner of Taxation in relation to a taxation law

where it is reasonable to expect the entity will rely on the service to satisfy liabilities or obligations, or to claim entitlements under a taxation law.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for registration, you must:

  • be at least 18 years of age
  • be a fit and proper person
  • satisfy the qualification and experience requirements
  • hold appropriate professional indemnity insurance.

If you are registering as a company or partnership, each director or individual partner must meet the requirements as above.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

To maintain your registration, you must meet the required continuing professional education (CPE) requirements.

To apply for this registration, you must create a My Profile account via the TPB My Profile portal.

Lodgement process

Apply

You must provide the below supporting documentation when lodging an application for registration:

  • proof of identity
  • electronic copies of award certificates, academic transcripts and course outlines, as required, to show you have completed the required qualifications
  • statement of relevant experience from a supervising tax agent or employer to demonstrate you have the required amount of experience
  • details of voting membership for any recognised tax agent association, if applicable.

Approval time

The Agency generally aim to process all applications within 30 days of receiving a complete application, however it may take up to 60 days if they are receiving high volumes of applications.
