Only genuine research organisations may apply for this approval. Genuine organisations are those undertaking scientific research activities into the physical or biological characteristics of the continental shelf for petroleum exploration or greenhouse gas storage. These activities include drilling stratigraphic holes, but exclude drilling petroleum exploration wells as research.
