Permit for the Use of Prohibited Weapons - Australian Capital Territory

Description

You will require this permit if you intend to possess or use items that are identified as prohibited weapons. Prohibited weapons include but are not limited to:

  • Crossbows;
  • Darts;
  • Catapults;
  • Batons;
  • Nunchaku and nunchaku batons;
  • Body armour;
  • Military equipment; and
  • Laser pointers.

Permits will only be granted where the proposed use of the item can be justified, such as solely for:

  • Sporting competition purposes; or
  • Theatrical and other productions.

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Exemptions

A noise suppression device is not a prohibited article, nor is a firearm which is attached to a noise suppression device, when being used by an authorised person for a prescribed purpose. A prescribed purpose may include;

  • the killing fauna on public land;
  • killing a native animal to alleviate its suffering;
  • activities that are reasonable and necessary for a firearms dealer to manufacture, acquire, dispose of, repair, maintain or test firearms or firearm parts at the place the person is registered to carry on the business of a firearms dealer.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • Be considered a fit and proper person for the purpose of the permit and present no danger to public safety or to peace;
  • Show sufficient good cause for possession of the item;
  • Have a clean police record;
  • Comply with any guidelines approved by the registrar for the storage and security of the prohibited weapon, and any other limitations; and
  • Pay the relevant application fees.
