Approval for a Method of Ballast Water Management - Australian Government

Description

From June 2016, you will require this approval if you intend to discharge ballast water from a vessel using a certain method. Ballast water is port water that is taken up by ships. It may be held in tanks on board to improve stability and manoeuvrability during transit. This water may contain pests.

A method of ballast water management may be a

  • ballast water treatment system
  • a prototype ballast water treatment system or
  • some other method.

The method of management may also be approved if the method has been approved by a foreign country in accordance with the Ballast Water Convention.
