You will require a permit if you intend to explore a specified area for petroleum within 3 nautical miles off the shore of New South Wales. Please be aware that anything introductory to, or knowingly connected with exploration for petroleum will require a permit. Petroleum means any naturally occurring hydrocarbon or mixture of hydrocarbon, whether in a gaseous, liquor or solid state. Petroleum is used to produce fuels including petrol, paraffin and diesel oil.
This permit will allow you to:
- explore for petroleum
- carry on such operations and execute such works as are necessary for that purpose, in the specified area.
The Agency may invite applications for the grant of a permit in respect of a block or blocks. Please be aware that if petroleum is discovered you will need to apply for a production licence to produce petroleum and a pipeline licence to convey petroleum.
Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.
