Permit to Acquire Firearms - New South Wales

Description

You will need this permit if you intend to purchase / acquire a firearm. A firearm cannot be legally sold, bought or acquired unless you (the purchaser) have a valid permit to acquire and the transaction takes place through a licensed firearms dealer.

You must already hold a relevant licence or permit authorising the use or possession of the firearm. This is a separate (additional) permit that is required for each firearm that you intend to acquire.

The purchase of any firearms must be conducted by a licensed NSW firearms dealer. If there is no licensed firearms dealer within 100km of the residential address of both the buyer and seller, the transaction may be witnessed by an authorised police officer.

The purchase of an imitation firearm does not require a permit to acquire firearms where you have a licence to possess or use an imitation firearm.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this permit, you must hold a firearms licence of the category that is appropriate to the firearm that you intend to acquire. You must have arrangements in place for the safe keeping of the firearm. A separate permit application must be completed for each firearm you intend to acquire.

You will be required to provide:

  • your licence or permit number
  • the type of firearm you intend to acquire
  • a good reason why you intend to acquire the firearm (what will the firearm be used for)
  • an application form accompanied by all required documentation
  • payment of the relevant fee.

If you have never held a firearms licence or permit in NSW, or you do not currently hold an equivalent issued firearms licence or permit interstate, you are required to complete a firearms safety training course and provide evidence of this with your application.

If you intend to acquire a handgun for sport / target shooting you will also need:

  • the Club Confirmation form that has been completed by a club official
  • the pistol firearms safety completion certificate (for probationary pistol licence holders only).
