If you intend to operate a general or assisted boarding house you are required to register the premises.
A facility is considered to be a general boarding house if it provides beds (for a fee or reward) for five or more people. A facility is considered to be an assisted boarding house if it provides beds (for a fee or reward) for two or more people with additional needs.
A person is considered to have additional needs if:
- They have an age related frailty, a mental health issue or a disability that is permanent or likely to be permanent; and
- The impairment results in the need for care or support services involving assistance with, or supervision of, daily tasks and personal care.
Please be aware that there are a range of facilities that fit these definitions that are not considered to be boarding houses, such as hotels, hospitals and retirement villages.
Please note that your boarding house will be inspected by the local council within twelve months of registration, and that further inspections may be required.
