Description

You will need this authorisation if you intend to use or possess a schedule 4, 7 or 8 poison in the course of your business.

  • schedule 4 substances are categorised as prescription only medicines
  • schedule 7 substances are categorised as dangerous poisons
  • schedule 8 substances are categorised as controlled drugs.

The use of scheduled medicines or controlled drugs may be needed by:

  • rangers
  • researchers
  • animal control officers
  • laboratories.

The use of dangerous poisons may be needed by:

  • power and water workers
  • welders
  • mine workers
  • laboratories.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must be able to demonstrate:

  • your organisation has procedures and guidelines for use of the medicines and poisons that: promote safe handling, use and disposal; have been endorsed by a veterinarian, if substances are for use on animals; address storage and record keeping requirements
  • a relationship between your organisation and a veterinarian able to advise you and check your skills, if substances are for use on animals
  • the substances will be stored safely
  • you understand the need for accurate records of purchase and use
  • the arrangements your organisation has to return or dispose of medicines and poisons
  • evidence of personal safety equipment and antidotes, if appropriate.
