Appointment as a Public Notary - New South Wales


You will need this appointment if you intend to become a public notary. Public notaries are barristers or solicitors who are given statutory powers at a national and international level to:

  • witness documents
  • administer oaths
  • draw up and certify wills, deeds, contracts and powers of attorney.

Public notaries must submit a notification of their current details annually.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to perform this service, you must:

  • have been a barrister or solicitor for at least 5 years
  • hold a current Australian practising certificate as a barrister, solicitor or legal practitioner
  • have completed the Notarial Practice Course.
