Appointment as an Accredited Person for a Mental Health Facility - New South Wales

Description

You will need this accreditation if you intend to examine mentally-ill patients for detention in a declared mental health facility. A declared mental health facility is a facility authorised under the Act to admit involuntary patients.

A person may only be detained in a declared mental health facility in limited circumstances, including:

  • on a mental health certificate given by a medical practitioner or accredited person
  • after an order for an examination and an examination or observation by a medical practitioner or accredited person.

Accredited persons are senior mental health practitioners with a minimum five years clinical experience in direct mental health consumer care.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, you must be a senior mental health practitioner with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience in direct mental heath consumer care.

Initial accreditation requires full participation in a two-day workshop and successful completion of an assessment task.

Every 3 years, Accredited Persons are required to attempt an online assessment.
