Approval of Automotive Technology Trial - New South Wales

Description

You will need this approval to trial automotive technology on state owned roads. Automotive technology refers to any technology related to advancement in design or construction of motor vehicles and includes technology related to highly or fully automated vehicles.

The purpose of this approval is to allow vehicle trials on public roads in situations where they would normally be prohibited - specifically when the vehicle may operate without a human driver for part or all of the time.

To be eligible for this approval your application must demonstrate compliance with the Guidelines for Trials of Automated Vehicles in Australia and with New South Wales Legislation. Your application must also include:

  • consent to provide certain data from the vehicle's black box.

You application must be made directly to the Smart Innovation Centre.

Once initial contact has been made, the Smart Innovation Centre will contact you to discuss specifics of the proposed trial. This will include the scope of the trial, technology to be tested, legal requirements, and information that is needed to demonstrate compliance with automated vehicle testing guidelines.

After assessment, the Smart Innovation Centre will make a recommendation to the Minster who will determine whether the application is successful. The final decision will be published on the NSW Legislation website.
