If you own or intend to own livestock, you may need to attach a permanent identifier to your stock. Livestock includes cattle, sheep, pigs and goats. A stock identifier, for example a brand or earmark, must not be attached to stock unless it is approved by the Agency or is a National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) accredited tag or device.
You must ensure that your stock has an identifier:
- before your livestock leaves your property, regardless of whether that property is the one on which it was born (for example, you may be selling the livestock)
- on arrival of the livestock in NSW
- if directed to do so by an inspector.
Brands or earmarks are supplied by the Agency, the district registrar, or an authorised person as authorised by the Act.
