You will require this approval if you intend to participate in a needle exchange program. Currently, the only needle exchange program available for participation is the New South Wales Needle and Syringe Program.
A needle exchange program is a program designed to prevent the spread of disease by facilitating the supply of sterile hypodermic syringes, needles and associated equipment to intravenous drug users and the provision of information regarding hygienic practices in the use of hypodermic needles and syringes, in order to prevent the spread of contagious disease and minimise health risks associated with intravenous drug use.
If you participate in the program, you will be required to stock a variety of injecting equipment, and other related equipment. Participation is open to health or community centres and pharmacies.
