You will require a permit if you intend to undertake aquaculture in NSW.
Aquaculture means cultivating fish or marine vegetation for the purposes of harvesting with a view to sale, or keeping fish or marine vegetation in a confined area for a commercial purpose.
The different classes of permits are listed below:
- Class A: authorises extensive aquaculture on public water land or land the subject of an aquaculture lease
- Class B: authorises intensive aquaculture on public water land or land the subject of an aquaculture lease
- Class C: authorises extensive aquaculture on freehold or leasehold land
- Class D: authorises intensive aquaculture on freehold or leasehold land
- Class E: authorises extensive freshwater aquaculture to be undertaken at 2 or more privately owned locations
- Class F: authorises a fish-out, which is a tourist operation where anglers can pay to fish in private ponds or tanks
- Class H: authorises the operation of a fish or marine vegetation hatchery.
Extensive aquaculture is aquaculture undertaken without providing supplementary food for the fish or marine vegetation that are being cultivated. Intensive aquaculture is aquaculture undertaken by providing supplementary food for the fish or marine vegetation that are being cultivated.
Please note, some activities are exempt from requiring a permit.
